Agriculture Subcommittee

Meetings on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.

Scope and Definitions:

To identify the most productive agricultural areas and adopt goals and objectives that will encourage their continuation and growth as a viable economic resource.

Agriculture: Is the cultivation of the soil, the raising of food crops, and the breeding and raising of livestock. It is the process of supplying human wants by raising products of the soil.

The Planning Process:

The process will focus on identifying the most productive agricultural areas, and adopt goals and objectives that will encourage their growth and continued use.

The working Group invites other individuals or groups with an interest in agriculture to participate in our meetings. As of now the following are scheduled:

McHenry county Farm Bureau voting members - March 28, 7PM

McHenry County Soil &Water Conservation District – April 26, 2007 6PM

Goal:

To preserve the most productive farmland, as a source for viable agricultural activities, that enhances the county’s economy and provides rural character.

Objectives:

1. Use LESA (productivity portion) to determine the most productive land.

2. Maintain and protect the most productive agricultural lands where appropriate, by discouraging non-agricultural growth in these areas.

3. Encourage best management practices to reduce potential negative impacts to natural resources.

4. Support enactment of state and county programs that provide incentives and support land owners who choose farming as a way of life.

5. Recognize the cultural, social, recreational, conservation, economic, environmental and aesthetic benefits provided by agricultural use.

6. Where and when appropriate, encourage development practices, such as conservation design, cluster development, etc. that promote agricultural preservation.
